Dr. N.C. Singhal

Ex. Associate Professor (Radiation Physics) & RSO,
SMS Medical College & Hospital Jaipur

Dr N.C. Singhal was born in village Jewar (district Bulandshahar) on 11th Feb 1942. Dr Singhal was the eldest son in his family. He completed his primary education in Khurja, UP. His father Dr Mahesh Chandra Singhal was Principal of Gandhi Vidhya Mandir, Sardarshahar and dean of faculty in Rajasthan University. His mother Shanti Devi Singhal was very learned and homely lady.

He completed his B.Sc. in 1960 and M.Sc. in 1962 from Birla college of Science, Pilani. After completing masters he joined as Lecturer in Fatehpur, Rajasthan and worked for about a year. In 1964 he successfully completed Diploma in Radiological Physics [Dip.R.P] from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay. In the same year (1964) he joined SMS Medical College and Hospital as Lecturer. In 1978 Dr Singhal completed his Ph.D. on “Effects of Therapeutic Irradiation on Certain Blood Enzymes of Cancer Patients.” Some of his research papers were published in British Journal of Radiology. He contributed by writing papers in various streams like “Radio sensitization of hypoxic cells by chemical drugs”, “Role of Physicist in the Hospital” and many more.

He was promoted to Associate Professor in Radiation Physics in 1982. He was the first Medical physicist and Radiation Safety Officer in Rajasthan state. He took voluntary retirement on 30th September, 1998 from the post of Associate Professor Radiation Physics and joined Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital & research Centre, Jaipur as Chief Medical Physicist. He also served SEAROC Cancer Center (Soni Hospital), Jaipur as Chief Medical Physicist & R.S.O. and continued there till his last. Dr. Singhal was pioneer & instrumental in developing latest state and art of radiotherapy facilities in Rajasthan including 3DCRT/SRS/SRT/IMRT/IGRT. All through his working life Dr. Singhal was devoted to his work that was helping Cancer patients.

He was a very simple, honest, kind hearted and very helpful human being and was always regarded and respected by his colleges, friends and family.

In recognition of the excellence achieved and professional thoroughness exhibited as an eminent teacher and Medical Physicist, the executive committee of the Association of Medical Physicists of India (Northern Chapter) considers it a privilege to confer the Dr N.C. Singhal Oration for the year 2026 to Dr. Pratik Kumar, Professor and In-Charge Medical Physics, Dr BRA IRCH AIIMS New Delhi India.

Dr Kumar earned his Post Graduate Diploma in Radiological Physics from Bhabha Atomic Research Center, Mumbai and PhD from AIIMS, New Delhi. He is credited with guiding more than ten PhD students. His work and experience have been recognized by IAEA, BIS, NABL, IEC and others. He has published more than 80 full-length papers, contributed 5 chapters and presented about 90 invited talks in various national and international platforms.

He is the recipient of the Dr Cyril Albert Jayachandran Endowment Oration 2019, conferred by the Tamil Nadu & Puduchery Chapter of AMPI. He is the Executive Editor of JMP and a member of the Editorial Board of the Indian Journal of Radiology & Imaging.
